Nobel Laureate Professor Osheroff Speaks at NDHU
Published : 2010-06-07

Nobel Laureate in Physics, Professor Douglas D. Osheroff, gave a Distinguished Lecture entitled “Richard Feynman: His Life and His Contributions to Science” on June 7, 2010, at National Dong Hwa University (NDHU).

Richard Feynman (1918 – 1988), a renowned physicist in quantum electrodynamics, superfluidity and particle physics, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 with two other scientists. His remarkable personality, genuine passion for science and pioneering work in physics have inspired generations of physicists, including young Osheroff, a then undergraduate at the California Institute of Technology attending his lectures.

The Distinguished Lecture was sponsored by the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation. Professor Osheroff’s lecture attracted over 800 participants. This included, other than the NDHU community, university and senior high school students in Hualien and the public.

Knowledge exchange has been an important element of NDHU’s mission. From time to time, distinguished lectures are held to inspire young students by the sharing of the sages and to broaden their horizons by meeting with some of the most brilliant minds in the world today.

Professor Osheroff’s research is focused on phenomena that occur at extremely low temperatures. In 1996, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of superfluidity in helium.
