National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) and Taiwan Economic Association (TEA) jointly held a symposium entitled “Industrial Policy in the Next 10 Years and Opportunities and Prospects for Eastern Industries” on October 15, 2010, at NDHU.

Prominent leaders in academic, government, and industry gathered on NDHU campus to exchange views on Eastern Taiwan’s industrial investment, sustainability, human resources development, and opportunities.

According to a survey by the United News in May 2010, Hualien was ranked as having the best living environment in Taiwan. However, of the 23 million population, only 340,000 live in Hualien. Due to inadequacies in industrial development, employment opportunities and transportation, people are reluctant to move to the eastern part of the island.

The symposium was officially open by Professor Zu-Tan Fu, TEA Vice-Chairman, Professor Ray-Shiung Chang, NDHU Vice-President, Professor Timothy Wang, Legislator, and Mr Jia-Ming Zhang, Deputy Director of Eastern Office of Executive Yuan. Speakers included Dr Qi-Yuan Liang, Minister of Executive Yuan, Dr Bert Lim, President of The World Economics Society, Professor Jiunn-Rong Chiou, Department of Economics of National Central University, Professor Jin-Li Hu, Director of Institute of Business and Management of National Chiao Tung University, Professor Yun-Jie Li, Consultant of National Policy Foundation, Professor De-Rui Hwang, Director of NDHU Research Center for Eastern Taiwan Industrial Development, and Professor Yin-Kann Wen, NDHU Professor Emeritus etc.

The symposium provided an opportunity to discuss the policy, development and prospects of Eastern Taiwan from different perspectives. NDHU community and the public were attracted to participate.
